I was enjoying my Sunday off on May 13th, 2012 and had just finished my lunch when I received a call from a friend requesting my immediate assistance with a website project. The project I soon learnt about was for the non-profit organisation “Love Angels” who do some great work helping both the woman and children in Afghanistan as well as orphans in Bali. They had just secured coverage on channel 7 news for 7pm that evening to help raise money for the Bali conjoined twins who were dubbed “Baby Green and Baby Blue”, the catch? As at 2pm they still had no domain name and no website to capture the traffic and donations from the news coverage.
So with the clock ticking down I grabbed a large cup of coffee and got straight to work. After securing some details from Simon (my contact from Love Angels) I registered the domain name babygreenbabyblue.org.au and built the website live on the domain to save time moving it later. By 5pm I had a working draft that would at bare minimum accept the donations which was my primary concern.
The following 2 hours were a mess of e-mails, calls and website changes back and forward between myself and Simon to make the website look exactly as he had envisioned it including colour changes and adding functionality like social sharing buttons to allow visitors to ask their friends on Facebook to donate as well.
After the news broadcast hit the website was flooded with traffic which was no problem for the G-Force web hosting servers and great news for the Love Angels. Over the following few weeks the website managed to generate over $15,000 in generous donations to assist the twins. Not a bad effort for a casual Sunday afternoon.
Update 3rd September: At the request of the Love Angels the website has been taken down as it’s purpose has been completed. The domain will now link back to the Love Angels primary website.
